General Surgery
General Surgery is a discipline of surgery having a central core of knowledge embracing anatomy, physiology, metabolism, immunology, nutrition, pathology, wound healing, shock and resuscitation, intensive care, and neoplasia, which are common to all surgical specialties.
General surgery, despite the name, is truly a surgical specialty. General surgeons not only perform surgeries for a wide range of general ailments, but are also responsible for patient care before, during, and after surgery. All surgeons must start their training in general surgery; many then go on to focus on another specialty.
A general surgeon has specific knowledge and experience connected to the diagnosis, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management, including the management of complications, in nine primary components of surgery, all of which are necessary to the education of a broadly based surgeon.
A general surgeon is a physician who has been educated and trained in the diagnosis and preoperative, operative, and postoperative management of patient care. Surgery necessitates knowledge of anatomy, emergency and intensive care, immunology, metabolism, nutrition, pathology, physiology, shock, and resuscitation, and wound healing. The general surgeon is trained to provide surgical care for the whole patient.
General Surgery Services
Minimal Access Surgery
The Division of General Surgery is dedicated to performing a surgical process using minimal access method whenever possible, so that patients may enjoy the faster recovery and fewer post-surgical complications.
Laparoscopic Surgery
The laparoscope, a fiber-optic telescope, is inserted through one port and attached to a camera. It sends images from the abdominal cavity to television monitors placed for simple viewing by all the operating room personnel.
Endoscopic Surgery
Endoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic tool, used to view the inside of organs, inspect for abnormalities and take biopsies.
Thyroid Surgery
We present partial and total thyroid removals for thyroid cancer and for suspicious thyroid lumps or nodules.
Lung Surgery
We present surgery for both malignant and benign lung disease. We also utilize a minimally invasive procedure called thoracoscopy for treatment of some lung diseases.
Ultrasound
Our surgeons have had additional training in ultrasound techniques. We now have the capability to perform ultrasound for breast disease, vascular disease, varicose veins, thyroid evaluations, lymph node evaluations and examination for possible fluid collections under the skin.
